Warum sollte man präkambrische Geologie studieren?

Das Präkambrium macht 82% der Erdgeschichte aus. Seine Gesteine sind das einzige Fenster zu den Prozessen und Umweltbedingungen der frühen Erde.

Wir bemühen uns um das Verständnis der archaischen Oberflächenprozesse und konzentrieren unsere Forschung auf einen der größten, komplexesten und besterhaltensten der alten Grünsteingürtel, den Barberton Grünsteingürtel Südafrikas und Eswatinis. Je nach Forschungsfragen kombinieren diese Studien Feldgeologie mit geochronologischen, stratigraphischen, sedimentologischen, strukturellen und/oder biogeochemischen Aspekten. 

Derzeit sind folgende Projekte aktiv:

  • Prof. Christoph Heubeck, Sprecher und Koordinator des ICDP-Projekts BASE (Barberton Archean Surface Environments), welches acht Kernbohrungen in der Moodies-Gruppe des Barberton Grünsteingürtel durchführte.
  • Terrestrische Umweltbedingungen der Moodies Gruppe (Doktorand Sebastian Reimann)
  • Der magmatische Komplex der Moodies Gruppe (Doktorand Deon Janse van Rensburg)

BASE

Folgende Projekte wurden kürzlich abgeschlossen:

  • Das älteste kartierbare Ökosystem der Erde: Biomatten der Moodies Gruppe (ehemaliger Doktorand Martin Homann, ehemalige Postdocs Dr. Inga Köhler und Dr. Sami Nabhan)
  • Die Rolle der partiell-konvektive-Umwälzung im Barberton Grünsteingürtel: Verknüpfung von tiefkrustalen, Mantel- und Oberflächenprozessen durch integrierte sedimentäre und strukturelle Analyse der syntektonischen Moodies-Gruppe (in Zusammenarbeit mit Prof. Martin van Kranendonk, Universität UNSW, Australien, und dem ehemaligen Doktoranden Matthias Schmitz)
